GLORIA DEI

PILGRIMAGE TO IONA, SCOTLAND

For about 10 years we’ve been studying Celtic Christian Spirituality at Gloria Dei. We’ve explored ideas like original blessing, deep knowing, the sacredness of creation, and listening for the heartbeat of God. Through book studies, adult education sessions, Looking Within Center events, and sermons we’ve explored the ancient mystery of faith through a Celtic lens.

In 2019 and again in 2023 I was fortunate enough to visit the birthplace of the Celtic Christian tradition on the island of Iona off the west coast of Scotland. Every year thousands of people make a pilgrimage to this sacred and ancient island. It is a place of listening, exploration, discernment, warm community and deep connection. Whether you have studied Celtic Christian spirituality for years, or it is a brand new idea, maybe it is time to explore this “thin place” where only a tissue paper separates the material from the spiritual. Let’s explore together!

DATES

May 23-29, 2026

We will be on the island of Iona for 6 days.

Upon arriving in the UK, transportation to and from the island can take an additional day or two in each direction. Transportation to the island involves flying, a train, a bus, and a couple ferry rides.

COST

THE PILGRIMAGE ON IONA IS ABOUT $1,300 PER PERSON

This includes lodging, three meals per day, and programming - this does not include airfare or other transportation to and from the island.

A non-refundable deposit of $260 per person is due upon registration.

ACCOMMODATIONS

While on the island of Iona we will stay at the Abbey. The Abbey was founded in 563, and is one of the oldest and most sacred sites in western Europe. It has recently undergone a renovation and serves as a place of communal living for guests on pilgrimage. Most rooms and restrooms are shared. Three meals per day are served family style along with other guests and volunteers in a shared dining facility. Guests all “chip in” and do about 30 minutes of chores (kitchen, housekeeping, etc.) per day.

  • There are a variety of opportunities available to guests of the Abbey. A short worship service happens in the ancient Abbey at 9am and 9pm every day.

There are opportunities for self guided hikes around the island to explore Columba Bay and Dun I (the highpoint on the island), enjoy the beautiful shore, shops, and more. There will also be an all day hike for those who want to explore the island in depth. There may also be an opportunity to take a boat ride to the Isle of Staffa to hike and see the Puffins.

There are lectures and presentations by volunteers and staff, guided meditations and contemplative practices, and time to express yourself through art. Throughout your time on the island you will have the opportunity to meet pilgrims and volunteers from around the world. The programmatic opportunities are not required, but you are encouraged to explore and stretch yourself as much as possible.

  • A trip from Rochester to Iona requires some endurance with two planes, a shuttle, a train, a bus, and two ferries. This can be a physically demanding trip as there are no cars to ride on the island, and walking is the primary mode of transportation. The Abbey does have one mobility scooter on site, and it can be shared by guests who need it. The Iona Abbey guest accommodations are partially accessible. There is an elevator from the ground to the first floor, three accessible bedrooms (one with a private bath), and two accessible bathrooms. The dining facility and sanctuary are also accessible.
