Carrie Smisek, New Pastor at Gloria Dei

We are so excited to welcome Carrie Smisek to our Pastoral Staff at Gloria Dei! Read more below about Carrie and her Ordination and Installation service.

About Carrie

Carrie Smisek was born and grew up on a dairy farm in Lonsdale, MN, where her love for Minnesota began. She attended Wartburg College in

Waverly, IA, where she majored in Religion and English and realized her skill in quoting Will and Grace. After struggling with the fact that she is called to ministry, Carrie enrolled in Luther Seminary, where, much to her relief, she found she can truly be herself and be a pastor.

She served her internship at Calvary Lutheran Church in Federal Way, Washington, where she learned much about who she is as a pastor, a leader, and a fan of rainy days and grunge music.

She loves learning more about who God is and what God is doing in this world around her and feels honored that she gets to walk with people on their journeys of faith.

She enjoys yoga, reading, deep conversations, attending pop rock concerts, and anything Harry Potter.

Carrie has been worshipping at Gloria Dei and occasionally preaching there since August of 2016 and has found it to be a welcoming community where she can hear the gospel, share in her love of God and be encouraged in her commitment to faith.

Q&A with Carrie

What is your fondest memory from growing up?

I have so many great memories of growing up. My fondest is probably when my parents, two brothers, and I went to Florida when I was in fifth grade. We went to Disney and had fun there (shout out to Space Mountain), but the best was when we drove down to Marco Island and spent time together on the beach. Everyone was relaxed and had so much fun just being around each other. We got to play on the beach and do silly things like rent a surrey bike for a trail around the island. We didn’t do too many big vacations growing up, so we all treasure this one.

What are you happiest doing, when you’re not working?

I am often happiest when I am doing yoga, listening to music on a long walk with my thoughts, reading, seeing live music, and spending time with friends and family.

What do you do with friends in your spare time?

We tend to share coffee or meals together, watch TV and movies, and walk around malls. You can also probably catch us at comic shops and bookstores. We’re nerds.

What are some causes you care about?

I am an ally to the LGBTQ* community and am always learning more about what that means and how I can support that community. I am also passionate about suicide prevention, as every life is worth being lived and every story is worth being told. And I’m a proponent of donating blood. It’s an easy way to save a life!

What is your favorite movie? TV Show? Book? Beverage? Food?

Movie: So many to name, but off the top of my head, Wonder Woman and Don’t Think Twice stand out.

TV Show: 30 Rock

Book: The Harry Potter series, in which my favorite is Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Right now I am reading Ready Player One by Ernest Cline and the Hate U Give by Angie Thomas and am finding them both to be quite good and very compelling.

Beverage: It tends to change with the season, but right now it’s Sparkling Green Tea Lemonade with a shot of raspberry from Caribou Coffee.

Food: Pizza!

What attracted you to Gloria Dei?

I enjoy the atmosphere of Gloria Dei – it’s welcoming and warm. I also appreciated the way that Gloria Dei has options for everyone, it seems, in worship. There’s a range from traditional to not-so-traditional without animosity. The good theology, the music, the creativity, and the people all made me want to come back time and time again.

What are you most excited about to work at Gloria Dei?

I am most excited to jump into this community and get to know everyone here. And I’m excited to see how we can show the love of God to people.

Ordination and Installation

All Gloria Dei Members and friends and family of Carrie’s are invited to her Ordination and Installation on Sunday, September 10th at 3pm in the Sanctuary at Gloria Dei. Desserts and conversation will follow in the Garden Lounge to continue the celebration.
